.cn Domain Names Available for 1 Yuan

The China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) announced that the first-year registration fee for .cn domain names shall be one Yuan (approximately EUR 0,09). Applicants who wish to register a .cn domain name before May 31 will be charged only one Yuan for the first year, while subsequent years will still cost 80 to 100 Yuan a year, which was the previous registration fee for a domain name in PR China.

At the end of 2006, there were in China 1.8 million websites that ended in “.cn” registered, which was a plus of 64.4 percent from the previous year. According to CNNIC statistics, the “.cn” domain is the largest in Asia and the world’s fourth-largest. Altogether, there are 4.2 million registered domain names in China, with most using the suffix .com or .net.

ICANN and DotAsia Organization Ltd. Sign .asia Registry Agreement

The ICANN and the DotAsia Organization Ltd. signed the .asia registry agreement on December 6, 2006 at the ICANN annual meeting in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

On 18 October 2006, the ICANN Board approved the designation of the .asia sponsored top-level domain. DotAsia Organization Ltd. is the first generic top level domain registry to be headquartered in the Asia-Pacific region.
